The Mayo Hegar Needle Holder is a strong, general-purpose needle holder. It is used for suturing in general, plastic, reconstructive, orthopedic, and cardiovascular surgery. It is particularly suited to larger needles and heavier suture materials, where a fine needle holder would not provide the same level of support.

The jaws are heavy and fitted with tungsten carbide inserts. These give the needle a firm hold and are designed to cope with repeated use. The textured carbide surfaces help keep the needle in place while suturing and reduce unwanted movement as it is passed through tissue.

There are several lengths available, from 16 cm (6¼”) to 30 cm (12″). A shorter holder can be convenient for work closer to the surface, while the longer sizes give more reach when the operative site is deeper. The choice of length can therefore be made according to the procedure rather than being limited to a single standard size.

The familiar Mayo Hegar pattern has a ratchet mechanism that holds the jaws closed around the needle. This is especially useful when working with larger needles, in that case the surgeon can secure the needle and concentrate on its placement without continuously squeezing the handles.

The instrument is made from premium surgical-grade stainless steel. Each needle holder is checked before supply for jaw alignment, ratchet movement, tungsten carbide insert condition, and overall finish. The stainless-steel construction is intended for repeated surgical use with appropriate cleaning and maintenance.
