Description

The Hintermann Distractor with Closed Arms is used to create and maintain separation between bony structures during foot, ankle, trauma, and reconstructive procedures. It can be used during arthrodesis, osteotomy, fracture treatment, and joint reconstruction when controlled distraction is needed to improve access to the surgical area.

The distractor has a closed-arm design with pin-placement holes for 1.6 mm and 2.5 mm fixation pins. The pins provide the connection to the bone, while the closed frame keeps the instrument stable during distraction. Once positioned, the bone segments can be separated to provide room for joint preparation, fracture work, implant placement, or correction of a deformity.

Adjustment is made through a ratcheted distraction mechanism. The ratchet allows the opening to be increased gradually rather than requiring a single large adjustment. This gives the user control over the amount of separation needed during the procedure and makes it possible to make further adjustments if the working space needs to change.

There are two available sizes. The 15 cm (6″) version has a maximum opening of 28 mm, while the 21 cm (8¼”) version opens to a maximum of 32 mm. The choice of length and opening depends on the anatomy and the amount of distraction required. The longer version provides additional reach for procedures where the working area is deeper.

The closed-arm frame is designed to remain stable once attached, while the ratchet provides the adjustment needed during the procedure. The instrument is checked for its general finish, pin holes, and operation of the distraction mechanism before being supplied.

Made from premium surgical-grade stainless steel, the distractor is suitable for routine cleaning, sterilization, and maintenance associated with reusable surgical instruments. Proper care helps maintain the frame and ratcheted mechanism over repeated use.
