Description
The Gillies Skin Hook is a fine retraction instrument used to lift skin and superficial tissue during procedures where a larger retractor would simply get in the way. It is commonly used in plastic, reconstructive, maxillofacial, facial, and dermatologic surgery, particularly when the surgeon is working through a relatively small area.
There are two hook sizes to choose from. The small pattern has a 3.5 mm hook, while the large pattern has a 5 mm hook. The difference gives the surgeon some flexibility depending on the tissue and how much retraction is required. For finer work, the smaller hook keeps the point of contact compact. The 5 mm version gives a broader hold when a little more tissue needs to be lifted.
Both versions measure 18 cm (7″) overall. That extra length provides useful reach, while the narrow shaft leaves plenty of room around the working end. It also helps keep the surgeon’s hand away from the immediate operative area, so the hook can be held in position without unnecessarily blocking the view.
The handle is shaped for a steady grip and the instrument remains relatively light in the hand. In use, the hook can be placed beneath the skin edge and lifted just enough to improve access for dissection, suturing, or other work taking place underneath.
Made from premium surgical-grade stainless steel, it is suitable for repeated use, cleaning, and sterilization. The material also provides good resistance to corrosion and everyday wear in a surgical setting.
