Description

The Kolbel Tissue & Muscle Spreader is a self-retaining retractor used to separate muscle and soft tissue during orthopedic, spinal, trauma, and general surgical procedures. It is designed for operations where the tissue needs to stay retracted for a period of time, leaving the surgeon free to work without having an assistant maintain the instrument manually.

The working end has angled single blunt prongs. The angle changes the approach to the tissue and can be helpful when the operative site is deeper or access is limited. Blunt tips hold the tissue without the sharper penetration of pointed prongs, making the configuration appropriate where controlled, atraumatic retraction is required.

An integrated ratchet controls the opening of the retractor. After the prongs are positioned, the handles can be adjusted gradually until the required separation is reached, then locked in place. The ring handles provide a familiar grip for opening and closing the instrument, while the self-retaining mechanism keeps the selected position during the procedure.

It measures 18 cm (7″) overall. Its relatively compact length allows it to be handled within the operative field while still providing useful reach. The angled profile also keeps the handles away from the immediate area being retracted, which can make access around the working site less awkward.
