Description

The Beckman – Adson Retractor is a self-retaining instrument designed to hold muscle and soft tissue away from the operative site during spinal, neurological, and orthopedic procedures. Its long arms and finger-ring handles allow the retractor to be positioned and locked in place, leaving both hands available for the surgical work. The jointed construction also allows the blades to adjust as the tissue is opened.

At the working end, there are 4 x 5 blunt prongs with a 32 mm depth. The blunt prongs provide a firm hold without the sharper tips used on other retractor patterns. Having several prongs on each side also spreads the retraction across the tissue rather than concentrating it at one point.

The overall length is 33 cm (13″), giving this retractor the reach needed for a deeper operative field. Its long arms keep the finger-ring handles away from the incision, while the jointed sections allow the blades to follow the position of the tissue as the retractor is opened.

The ratcheting action holds the arms apart once the desired exposure has been reached. This is especially useful in spinal surgery, where paraspinal muscle and other soft tissue may need to remain retracted for an extended period. The surgeon can adjust the opening rather than relying on an assistant to maintain the same position.

It is made from premium surgical-grade stainless steel for repeated surgical use and sterilization. The blunt prongs should be checked for alignment and smoothness, while the joints, ratchet, and finger rings should move properly without excessive looseness or stiffness.
