Description
The Meyerding Hemi Laminectomy Retractor is a self-retaining instrument used to hold muscle and soft tissue away from the surgical field during spinal procedures. Its paired solid blades open with the ring handles and remain in position once the retractor is set, giving the surgeon steady exposure without needing an assistant to hold it. It is commonly used when access to one side of the spine needs to be maintained during laminectomy and related procedures.
The blades are available in narrow and wide options. The narrow versions measure 10 mm in width, while the wide versions measure 20 mm. For each width, there are 50 mm, 60 mm, and 70 mm blade sizes. This gives six blade-size combinations, allowing the retractor to be matched to the depth and amount of tissue being held.
At 18 cm (7″) overall length, the instrument has a compact size for spinal exposure. The solid blades are available for both left and right sides, so the appropriate orientation can be selected according to the surgical approach. The different blade depths also provide a choice between a shorter reach and deeper tissue engagement.
During a laminectomy, muscle and other soft tissue may need to be moved away from the vertebral area to create a clear working space. Once positioned, the self-retaining mechanism keeps the blades apart, leaving the surgeon’s hands free for the main procedure. The solid blade design provides a continuous surface for holding the tissue rather than using separate prongs.
The instrument is made from premium surgical-grade stainless steel for repeated surgical use and sterilization. The blades should be checked for smoothness and proper alignment, while the hinge, locking mechanism, and handles should be inspected for any stiffness, looseness, or damage before use. Proper cleaning and sterilization should follow the facility’s established reprocessing procedure. Stainless-steel Meyerding hemi-laminectomy retractors are available as reusable surgical instruments.
With an 18 cm (7″) length, left- or right-sided solid blades, and 10 mm or 20 mm blade widths in 50 mm, 60 mm, or 70 mm sizes, the Meyerding Hemi Laminectomy Retractor offers several options for controlled spinal exposure.
