Description

The Tuffier Rib Spreader is used to separate the ribs during open chest surgery. It has two wide blades joined to a long central bar. A screw and round turning knob sit on the bar and are used to move the blades apart. The arms curve outward from the centre, keeping the main working part over the chest wall.

The blades are 45 mm wide and 50 mm deep. They are broad rather than narrow, with a slightly curved shape that follows the area where the ribs are held apart. The two sides move along the central toothed bar, so the opening can be changed by turning the screw instead of moving the whole instrument.

Small raised teeth can be seen across the inside surface of the blades. These are the surfaces that come against the ribs. The teeth give the blades some grip while the spreader is being used. The long central bar also has closely spaced teeth along its length, with the adjustment part running over them.

This spreader is used during thoracotomy and open thoracic surgery, including procedures where access to the heart, lungs, or other structures inside the chest is needed. It can also be used in cardiovascular operations that require the chest to remain open. The blades are placed between the ribs and then opened gradually with the central screw.

The instrument is made from surgical stainless steel. Its solid construction is suitable for repeated use and sterilization in the operating room.
