Description

The Tudor Edwards Modified Tuffier Rib Spreader is used to hold the ribs apart during open chest surgery. It has two broad blades joined to a long central bar, with a screw mechanism between the arms. A separate key is supplied with the spreader for turning the adjustment mechanism. The arms are curved and keep the handles away from the area being exposed.

The blades measure 25 mm in width and 35 mm in depth. They are smaller than the wider blades found on some rib spreaders, giving this pattern a more compact working end. The blades are set at an angle to the arms and have a broad contact surface where they sit against the ribs.

Small raised teeth cover the inner surface of both blades. This is the side placed against the ribs during use. The central bar has a row of teeth along its length, while the screw assembly moves along the bar to open or close the spreader. The supplied key fits into the adjustment mechanism and is used to turn it.

It is used in thoracic surgery and thoracotomy when the ribs need to be held apart for access to the chest. It may also be used during open cardiovascular procedures where the chest has to remain retracted. The blades are positioned between the ribs and opened gradually until the required space is reached.

The spreader is made from surgical stainless steel for repeated surgical use. Before dispatch, every piece goes through our quality inspection process.
