Description

The Ferris-Smith Disc Rongeur is made for removing disc material and soft tissue during discectomy, spinal decompression, and other spinal procedures. It comes with a choice of straight or 40° upward jaw, so the instrument can be selected based on the angle that works better for the area being reached.

The straight jaw gives a direct approach, while the 40° upward version gives the working end a different angle when a straight approach isn’t quite as convenient. Having both options can be useful when working in different areas of the spine, since the same jaw position isn’t always ideal for every procedure.

There are four bite sizes available: 2 mm, 3 mm, 4 mm, and 5 mm. The smaller sizes are suited to taking smaller amounts of material, while the larger bites allow more tissue or disc material to be grasped at once. This gives the user some flexibility when choosing an instrument for the job instead of having to work with one fixed size.

The shaft is available in two lengths, 18 cm (7″) and 20 cm (8″). The 18 cm version provides a slightly shorter option, while the 20 cm shaft gives some additional reach when the working area is deeper. The choice can simply come down to the procedure and how much reach is needed.

The ring handle gives the instrument a familiar way to grip and operate the jaws. It also makes the rongeur easy to control when it needs to be opened and closed repeatedly during a procedure. The overall design is straightforward, with the different jaw, bite, and shaft options doing most of the work.

It is made from surgical-grade stainless steel and goes through quality checks before it is supplied. The instrument is inspected for its overall finish and proper operation, including the movement of the jaws. The stainless-steel construction also makes it suitable for regular cleaning and maintenance as a reusable surgical instrument.

With its choice of straight or 40° upward jaw, four bite sizes, and two shaft lengths, Ferris-Smith Disc Rongeur gives surgical teams several configurations to choose from. It is a practical option when disc material or soft tissue needs to be removed during spinal procedures.
