The Charnley Pin Retractor is used during hip and acetabular procedures to move soft tissue and muscle away from the operative area. It is particularly useful when the surgeon needs a clearer view of the acetabulum without having a larger retractor occupying space around the joint. The pin-based arrangement keeps the retracted tissue away while leaving room for other instruments.

The system uses pins placed into the bone to hold the surrounding tissue and musculature back. Once positioned, the pins provide a fixed point for retraction rather than relying on a conventional blade. This can be useful during hip reconstruction and arthroplasty, where access around the acetabulum needs to remain open as the procedure progresses.

The set includes a T-handle introducer and two pins with attached safety chains. The T-handle is used to introduce the pins in a controlled manner. The paired pins then provide the points needed for tissue retraction. The chains remain attached to the pins and provide a simple way to identify and retrieve them at the end of the procedure.

Because the pins sit close to the area being exposed, the system has a relatively compact profile. This leaves the surgeon more room to work around the hip and acetabular region and reduces the amount of hardware immediately surrounding the operative site. The arrangement is especially useful where conventional retractors may interfere with access.
