The Anterior Disc Rongeur is made for spinal procedures where the working area is deeper and a standard-length instrument may not be enough. It can be used during anterior discectomy, decompression, and other procedures where disc material or soft tissue needs to be reached and removed from a deeper area.

The first thing to notice about this version is the 35 cm (13½”) shaft. It gives the instrument considerably more reach than a shorter rongeur, which can be helpful during anterior approaches. The extra length lets the working end reach farther while the handle stays at a more comfortable distance from the surgical site.

There are two jaw options, straight and upward. The straight jaw gives a direct approach, while the upward version changes the angle of the working end when that works better for the area being accessed. Having both options means the instrument can be chosen around the procedure instead of trying to make one jaw configuration work for everything.

The bite sizes are 2.4 mm, 4 mm, 6 mm, and 8 mm. The smaller sizes are a good option when only a smaller amount of material needs to be removed. The 6 mm and 8 mm versions give a wider bite, and these larger configurations have toothed jaws for a firmer hold on the material being grasped.

That difference can be useful depending on what the procedure calls for. Sometimes a small, smooth bite is all that is needed. Other times, having a larger toothed jaw gives the user a better grip on the material being removed.

The long shaft is really what sets this version apart. If the working area is deep, using a standard-length instrument may simply not give enough reach. With 35 cm to work with, there is more room to position the instrument without bringing the handle too close to the operative site.

It is made from surgical-grade stainless steel and is checked during the quality-control process before it is supplied.
