Description

The Charnley Horizontal Hip Retractor is used during hip surgery when the surgeon needs a wider and more stable view of the operative area. It is a self-retaining design, so once positioned, it can hold the surrounding tissue and structures away from the working site without someone having to keep the retractor in place by hand. This can be useful during hip reconstruction and other orthopedic procedures where exposure needs to remain steady.

The horizontal arrangement gives the instrument a relatively low position around the operative field. Its hinged joints allow the blades to move as the retractor is positioned, rather than keeping both sides completely fixed. This can make it easier to adapt the instrument to the shape of the area being exposed and to make small positioning changes during surgery.

It is commonly used in hip procedures to retract the detached greater trochanter headward while positioning the femur toward the feet. This arrangement helps open the surgical area around the hip and gives the surgeon better access while working on the joint. The wide opening is particularly useful when more room is required around the operative site.

The retractor measures 28 cm (11″) overall and has an 18 mm blade depth with a 7″ opening. Rather than being intended for small, localized exposure, its proportions are suited to the larger working area encountered during hip procedures.

The hinged construction and self-retaining mechanism are checked as part of the instrument’s quality inspection, along with the blades, joints, and general finish. Proper movement of the components is important for an instrument that will be positioned and adjusted during surgery.

Made from premium surgical-grade stainless steel, the retractor is intended for repeated surgical use and routine cleaning and sterilization. With appropriate maintenance, the material and moving joints can be kept in good working condition over time.

For hip procedures where broad and steady exposure is needed, the Charnley Horizontal Hip Retractor offers a hinged, self-retaining design suited to the demands of orthopedic surgery.
