Description

The Charnley Vertical Retractor is a self-retaining instrument used to keep soft tissue retracted during orthopedic, spinal, trauma, and reconstructive procedures. Its vertical frame keeps the instrument relatively clear of the main working area, which can be useful when the surgeon needs a steady view of the operative site.

At the working end are opposing 3 × 4 sharp prongs. The prongs engage the soft tissue and fascia and hold their position while the procedure is being carried out. The blade depth is 22 mm, giving the prongs enough depth to maintain the retraction without requiring a large instrument.

The retractor uses an integrated ratchet locking mechanism. Opening the handles separates the prongs, and the ratchet keeps them at the selected position. Once set, the retractor can maintain the required tissue separation without someone having to hold it continuously. The width can be changed if more or less exposure is needed during the procedure.

Its overall length is 24.5 cm (9½”). The longer frame gives it useful reach for deeper operative areas and leaves enough room between the handle and working end for positioning around the surgical field. The vertical arrangement is also helpful where a conventional horizontal retractor would get in the way.

The sharp-prong pattern is intended for procedures where a firm hold on the tissue is needed. Before supply, the retractor is checked for its general finish and working condition, including the prongs, frame, and movement of the ratchet.

Made from premium surgical-grade stainless steel, the instrument is suitable for routine cleaning, sterilization, and repeated surgical use. Proper maintenance helps preserve the prongs, locking mechanism, and surface finish.
