Description
The Cottle Chisel is a straight nasal chisel used for cutting and reshaping bone during nasal and facial surgery. It measures 18.5 cm / 7½” and has a slim, straight shaft with a flat working end. The rounded handle gives the hand a firm area to hold while the chisel is positioned against the bone.
Six sizes are available: 4 mm, 6 mm, 7 mm, 8 mm, 9 mm, and 12 mm. The smaller widths are suited to narrower areas, while the wider options cover more bone with each pass. Having several sizes allows the working edge to be chosen according to the part of the nasal framework being treated.
In rhinoplasty and septoplasty, this type of chisel can be used for nasal bone cutting, reshaping, and controlled osteotomy. It may also be used during facial reconstructive procedures where small sections of bone need to be trimmed or shaped. The straight design keeps the working end easy to place and direct.
The length of 18.5 cm gives the instrument enough reach for work around the nasal framework while keeping the handle outside the immediate operative area. The blade width can be selected according to the cut being made, with the 4 mm and 6 mm options giving a narrower working edge and the 9 mm and 12 mm sizes covering a broader area.
Made from surgical stainless steel, the chisel is intended for repeated professional use and routine sterilization. The working edge should be checked for chips or damage during instrument inspection, while the shaft and handle should remain straight and free from surface damage.
For nasal bone work, the Cottle Chisel offers a straightforward design with an 18.5 cm length and six blade-width choices. The range from 4 mm to 12 mm gives flexibility for different areas of bone cutting, trimming, and reshaping during rhinoplasty, septoplasty, and related reconstructive procedures.
