Description
The Kolbel Tissue & Muscle Spreader is a self-retaining instrument used to hold tissue and muscle away from the operative area during orthopedic, spinal, trauma, and general surgical procedures. It is intended for situations where steady retraction is needed without having someone continuously hold the instrument by hand. Once positioned, the retractor can remain in place while the surgeon works within the exposed field.
At the tip are opposing single blunt prongs. Their rounded profile is intended to engage soft tissue without the penetrating effect of sharp points. This is useful when the retractor needs to stay in contact with muscle or other tissue during an operation. The simple prong arrangement also keeps the working end relatively compact.
A ratchet is built into the instrument, allowing the jaws to be opened and locked at the required position. The surgeon can adjust the amount of separation according to the exposure needed rather than relying on a fixed opening. The locking action also means the selected position can be maintained while other surgical instruments are being used.
It measures 18 cm (7″) overall. Two patterns are available: straight and angled. The straight version provides a direct approach to the tissue, while the angled pattern can be chosen when the operative site or surrounding anatomy makes a different approach more convenient. Both versions use the same single blunt-prong arrangement.
For instruments that remain in the operative field, construction and finish matter alongside the working design. This model is made from premium surgical-grade stainless steel and undergoes quality control inspection before supply. The material is suitable for repeated surgical use when handled, cleaned, and sterilized according to established instrument-care procedures.
The Kolbel Tissue & Muscle Spreader is therefore a straightforward option for procedures requiring self-retaining tissue or muscle retraction. Its blunt prongs, locking ratchet, and choice of straight or angled pattern allow the instrument to be selected according to the access and exposure required.
