Description
The Matson Rib Raspatory measures 22 cm (8¾”) and has a different working end at each side. One end is a 15 mm wide elevator, while the other is a 22 mm wide stripper. The two ends have different profiles, and the instrument can be turned around to use either one.
The elevator has a short tip that bends upward from the shaft. The stripper end is wider, with a flatter working surface. Between them is a long, flat metal body with shaped ends for handling. There are no joints or moving parts.
During rib surgery, the periosteum covering the bone may need to be lifted and separated. The narrower elevator can be used to begin lifting this tissue, while the wider stripper is used to continue separating it along the rib. Which end is used depends on the stage of the dissection.
Both working ends are part of the same instrument, so there is no need to switch to a separate tool when moving between the two widths. The different tip shapes allow the surgeon to work along the rib using the end suited to the area being treated.
The instrument is made from surgical stainless steel and can be cleaned and sterilized for reuse. Before dispatch, each piece is inspected for damage or rough edges on both working ends. The central body and surface finish are also checked.
The Matson Rib Raspatory combines a 15 mm elevator and a 22 mm stripper in one 22 cm instrument. It is used for lifting and separating the periosteum during rib procedures.
