The Mollison Self-Retaining Retractor – Child is a compact surgical retractor designed for procedures where steady tissue exposure is needed in a smaller operative field. It is suitable for pediatric surgery and can also be used in plastic, ENT, and minor surgical procedures. Its self-retaining design keeps the instrument in position once adjusted, reducing the need for continuous manual retraction.

The retractor has opposing 2 × 2 sharp prongs with a 12 mm prong depth. These prongs provide a firm hold on skin, soft tissue, and wound edges during the procedure. The sharp points help prevent the retractor from slipping when a secure grip is needed. A curved frame surrounds the working area and leaves space for access to the tissue being treated.

At 13 cm (5¼”) in overall length, the Child pattern is sized for smaller anatomical structures and more confined surgical sites. The integrated ratchet mechanism allows the opening of the retractor to be adjusted according to the amount of exposure required. Once set, the ratchet keeps the prongs in place throughout the procedure, leaving the surgeon’s hands available for other tasks.

The lightweight construction makes it straightforward to position and reposition when access needs to be changed. Its compact dimensions are also useful when a larger retractor would be difficult to place without obstructing the operative field.

Made from premium surgical-grade stainless steel, the instrument is built for repeated surgical use and provides resistance to corrosion when properly cleaned, maintained, and sterilized. The stainless steel construction also gives the frame the rigidity needed to maintain its position while the ratchet is engaged.
