Description
The Semb Rib Raspatory is used to lift the periosteum from the rib during thoracic surgery. It has a long, solid handle and a narrow metal shaft. The working end varies by pattern, with notched, straight, and oval blade options available.
No. 1 measures 20 cm (8″) and has a notched tip for working along the rib edge. No. 2 has a similar notched end and measures 21 cm (8¼”). No. 3 is 22 cm (8¾”) long, with a straight tip. No. 5 is also 22 cm long but has a broad oval blade.
The difference between these patterns is mainly at the working end. The notched tips have a dip in the edge, while No. 3 has a straighter profile. No. 5 has a wider, rounded end. The handle is smooth and broad, with a tapered section where it joins the shaft.
During rib surgery, the thin layer covering the bone may need to be separated before the surgeon continues. The notched patterns can be worked along the rib edge, while the straight and oval ends offer different contact shapes for the dissection. The surgeon selects the pattern according to the area being treated.
Made from surgical stainless steel, the instrument can be cleaned and sterilized for reuse. Before dispatch, each piece is checked for damage or rough edges at the tip, along with irregularities on the shaft and handle. The overall finish is inspected as well.
The Semb Rib Raspatory comes in four patterns measuring 20–22 cm. No. 1 and No. 2 have notched tips, No. 3 has a straight end, and No. 5 has an oval blade for rib periosteum work.
