Description

The Yankauer Suction Tube is a surgical instrument used to remove blood and other fluids from the operative field. It has a long metal shaft with a broad and angled working end. It has a flat handle on the opposite end. The shape of the tip and the length of the tube make this pattern different from the narrower suction tubes used for more confined areas.

The tube measures 30.5 cm (12″) overall. Its shaft begins with a short and angled tip that has a gradual curve before joining the handle. The opening at the working end is wider than the shaft with small openings visible at the tip. This gives the instrument a broader suction end than a tube with a simple open, narrow tip.

The long shaft has a noticeable bend and this curve leads towards the working end, while the main body remains slim. The wider tip is designed to draw fluid from the surgical area, and the shape of the shaft allows the instrument to be directed without the handle sitting directly beside the tip.

The handle section is broad and flattened, with a smooth surface and a narrow opening running along much of its length. A connector is fitted at the rear, and opposite the working end. This fitting joins the instrument to compatible suction equipment. The handle is wider than the shaft which gives the surgeon a separate area to hold while guiding the tube.

The instrument is made from surgical stainless steel and is intended for reuse when permitted, following the appropriate cleaning and sterilization procedures.
