Description

Duncan Walker Rib Spreader is an infant-size rib retractor used to hold the ribs apart during chest surgery. It has two curved arms with small blades at the ends and a toothed bar running through the middle. The arms open as the handle is moved along the bar, creating space between the ribs.

The arms measure 57 mm in length. There are two sizes of the spreader. One has a 5 mm blade depth and a 9 mm size, while the other has a 7 mm blade depth and a 12 mm size. The smaller measurements are intended for use in the infant chest, where a larger rib spreader would take up more space.

Each arm ends in a small curved blade. The blades face inward when the spreader is placed in position. A row of teeth along the central bar allows the arms to be moved apart in small steps. The handle and locking part sit above the bar and are used to open and hold the retractor at the required position.

The spreader can be used in pediatric thoracic and cardiac surgery to keep the ribs separated after the chest has been opened. It may be used during procedures where the surgeon needs a clear working space inside the chest. The two blade sizes allow the instrument to be selected according to the size of the infant and the space needed during the procedure.

The body is made from surgical stainless steel with a smooth metal surface. The teeth on the rack, curved arms, blades, and moving parts are checked for proper movement and fit.
