Description

The Gelpi Laminectomy Retractor is a self-retaining retractor used to hold tissue apart during spinal, orthopedic, neurosurgical, and laminectomy procedures. Its narrow frame makes it useful in smaller operative fields, while the inward-facing prongs provide a way to maintain exposure around the surgical site without needing an assistant to hold the instrument continuously.

It is available with sharp or blunt prongs. The sharp pattern gives a firmer grip on the tissue, while the blunt version is better suited to situations where less aggressive tissue engagement is preferred. Both patterns use the same basic self-retaining design, with the choice depending on the procedure and the type of tissue being retracted.

There are three size options. The 18.5 cm (7¼”) pattern has a 30 mm prong depth, the 19.5 cm (7¾”) pattern has a 50 mm prong depth, and the 20 cm (8″) pattern has a 70 mm prong depth. These different depths make it possible to choose a size according to how far into the operative field the retractor needs to reach.

A self-retaining ratchet mechanism keeps the prongs in the selected position once the retractor has been opened. The width can be adjusted as needed, then maintained while the procedure continues. This is particularly useful during longer operations where steady exposure is required.

The narrow profile and inward-facing prongs allow the retractor to be positioned in confined surgical areas without using a broad frame. Before supply, the instrument is checked for its general finish and operation, including the movement of the ratchet and condition of the prongs.

Made from premium surgical-grade stainless steel, the retractor is suitable for routine cleaning, sterilization, and maintenance associated with reusable surgical instruments. Proper care helps preserve the prongs, ratchet, and overall finish.
