Description
The Hardman Retractor is a self-retaining retractor used to hold soft tissue apart during spinal and neurosurgical procedures. Its scissor-style handles and locking mechanism allow the arms to remain open once positioned, so the surgeon does not need an assistant to keep the retractor in place. The curved arms bring the prongs into the operative field while the handles stay farther back.
The working ends have a short prong with 30 mm depth and a longer prong that reaches 50 mm depth. This difference gives the retractor an uneven working profile, allowing it to sit securely in the wound while providing the depth needed for deeper tissue exposure. The prongs are available in different arrangements depending on the version selected.
At 20 cm (8″) overall length, the retractor has enough reach for deeper operative fields without becoming unnecessarily large. There are three configurations: 50 mm equal prongs, long left prong, and long right prong. The left- and right-sided versions place the longer 50 mm prong on the corresponding side, with the shorter prong remaining at 30 mm depth.
The self-retaining action is useful during spinal exposure, particularly when muscle and other soft tissue need to stay retracted for the duration of the procedure. Once the arms have been opened to the required position, the locking mechanism helps maintain the exposure while leaving both hands available for the surgical work. These retractors are used as self-retaining retractors in neurosurgical and spinal settings.
It is manufactured from premium surgical-grade stainless steel for repeated surgical use and sterilization. Before use, the prongs should be checked for alignment and smoothness, while the hinge, ratchet, and handles should move properly without sticking or excessive looseness. Cleaning and sterilization should follow the facility’s established instrument-reprocessing procedure.
With 30 mm short-prong depth, 50 mm long-prong depth, and 20 cm (8″) overall length, the Hardman Retractor offers left, right, and equal-prong configurations for steady self-retaining tissue exposure.
