Description
The Jefferson Self Retaining Retractor is a compact self-retaining instrument used to hold the edges of an incision apart during surgery. Its two opposing arms open with the built-in locking mechanism and stay in position once the desired amount of retraction has been set. The design is useful when the surgeon needs both hands free rather than having someone hold a separate retractor.
The working ends have 3 x 4 blunt prongs with a 16 mm depth. The blunt tips provide a firm grip on the tissue without the pointed ends found on sharp-pronged retractors. With several prongs on each side, the pressure is spread across the wound instead of being concentrated at one small point.
At 13 cm (5¼”) long, it has a compact profile for smaller operative fields. The finger-ring handles make it easy to open and position, while the self-retaining action keeps the jaws separated after adjustment. That is handy when steady exposure needs to be maintained for more than a few moments.
Once positioned, the prongs hold the tissue at the sides of the incision and leave the central area open for the surgeon to work. This type of self-retaining retractor can be used in orthopedic, neurological, and other procedures where a relatively small wound needs consistent exposure.
The instrument is made from premium surgical-grade stainless steel for repeated surgical use and sterilization. Before use, the prongs should be checked for alignment and smoothness, and the hinge and locking mechanism should open and close properly. Any bending, rough surfaces, or damage should be addressed before the instrument is returned to service. Reusable Jefferson retractors are supplied as non-sterile instruments that require sterilization before use.
With its 3 x 4 blunt prongs, 16 mm depth, and 13 cm (5¼”) length, the Jefferson S/R Retractor provides steady, hands-free tissue retraction in a compact design.
