Description

The Volkmann Catspaw Retractor is a hand-held retractor for pulling back skin, soft tissue, fascia, and wound edges during surgery. The catspaw-style end gives the surgeon a number of small contact points instead of one broad blade, which can be useful when the tissue needs to be held back from a particular area.

The prongs are available in semi-sharp or blunt versions. Semi-sharp prongs give a firmer hold when the tissue needs to stay in position, while the blunt pattern is more appropriate when a gentler point of contact is preferred. There are also three prong arrangements: 3 prongs with a 15 mm width, 4 prongs with a 20 mm width, and 6 prongs with a 30 mm width. The choice can be made according to the size of the area being retracted and the amount of tissue involved.

At 21.5 cm (8½”), the retractor provides useful reach and leverage while remaining manageable in the hand. The ring handle gives the fingers a secure place to hold the instrument, which is particularly useful when the retractor needs to remain in position for some time. The longer length can also be helpful when the working area is deeper.

The different prong patterns make the retractor useful across plastic, reconstructive, orthopedic, and general surgery. A smaller three-prong pattern may be enough for a limited area, while the wider six-prong version can engage a broader section of tissue.
