Description

The Capsule Spreader is a self-retaining retractor used to separate and hold soft tissue and capsular structures during surgery. It can be used in orthopedic, spinal, and general procedures where a steady opening of the operative area is needed. Once positioned, the instrument maintains the retraction without requiring continuous pressure from the surgeon or an assistant.

Its working end has a single blunt prong set at a distinct 90° angle. This configuration allows the prong to approach tissue from the side rather than directly in line with the handles, which can be helpful when working in deeper or confined areas. The blunt tip provides a firm point of contact while avoiding the sharper penetration associated with pointed retractors.

The ring handles and integrated ratchet provide control over the amount of spreading. The instrument can be opened gradually until the required tissue separation is reached, after which the ratchet holds the selected position. This leaves the surgeon’s hands available for other parts of the procedure and keeps the exposure from changing unnecessarily.

The 90° working profile is particularly relevant when access is awkward or when a straight instrument would place the handles too close to the area being exposed.
