Description

The Irwin Self-Retaining Retractor has a larger frame than some of the smaller self-retaining retractors in this range, making it suitable when more tissue needs to be held away from the surgical site. It is used in plastic, orthopedic, reconstructive, and general procedures. Once the retractor is placed and adjusted, its self-retaining action keeps it open without the need for continuous hand-held support.

The working end has 4 × 4 prongs with a 20 mm prong depth. The available versions are sharp and blunt. Sharp prongs give a stronger grip on the tissue, while the blunt pattern can be chosen when a less penetrating form of retraction is preferred. The choice between the two depends on the type of tissue and the procedure.

At 17.5 cm (6¾”) long, it provides a useful amount of reach without being excessively large. The frame can be adjusted through its ratchet mechanism, which holds the prongs at the selected position. This allows the surgeon to set the amount of separation needed and change it during the procedure if necessary.
